English Review after the jump
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
Finalmente li-o e finalmente percebi o hype.
Adorei-a!
A sério, vale a pena.
This book was all everybody was talking about even before it was published. It received so much hype that, inevitably, I was curious to read it and find out why so many consider Everything, Everything one of the best books of the year.
Finally I read it and finally I understood the hype. This book is beautiful in every way: the cover is beautiful, the illustrations are wonderful, the story is full of cuteness moments and Nicola Yoon's writing is spectacular.
I wasn't really sure what to expect. All I knew about this book before picking it up was that the protagonist, Madeline Whittier, was allergic to everything and never left her house. Then, Olly, the boy who moves into the house next door, enters the picture and Madeline's life changes.
I don't want to tell you much about this book because I, despite not knowing anything about what really happened, felt that some of the updates I was reading on Goodreads about this book ended up revealing more than what I wanted to know. My advice: jump head first into this book without knowing anything beyond what you are told in the synopsis, you won't regret it.
The first thing I have to talk to you about are the illustrations. They are beautiful and give a completely different dimension to the book. Without them, the story wouldn't have impacted me the way it did. The illustrations, images, e-mails, all that helped make this book special. If you aren't sure whether you want to read this book or not, because you think it'll be just another YA Contemporary like many others, I assure you it isn't.
As for the characters, all were spectacularly built and developed. Our protagonist is Madeline, a 18-year-old girl who never left her house due to her illness. I loved her! Despite having to live like this, she isn't always complaining about it, quite the contrary. I loved her personality and she's one of those characters you just want as your best friend.
Oliver aka Olly, is the boy who moves next door to Madeline. Seriously, what a sweet guy! He's funny, kind and even a little weird, in a good way. He also has his own story and his problems don't depend only on his relationship with Madeline. I would love to read this story from his point of view!
The story was much more than I thought it would be and I was constantly amazed by it. The illustrations also help bring to life the story of Madeline and I tell you, it was impossible for me to stop thinking about this book even some time after I finished it.
I absolutely loved the writing! Do you know when you are so fond of something that you can't even describe it? That's exactly what I feel about the writing of this author. It's one of those writings that makes us mark each passage because they are all beautiful and all have touched us in some way. If you don't want to read this book for anything else, read it for the writing. Seriously, it's worth it.
This is a book that deserves all the hype, in my opinion. I recomend it if you're looking for a good contemporary book that brings something different to the table.
